The Department of Architecture of Stamford University Bangladesh organized a discussion and lecture at the university’s Siddheshwari campus auditorium to observe World Architecture Day 2026.

This year’s theme was “Housing is a Human Right: Let’s Build It.”

Sonya Afrin,  Chairman and Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture, delivered the welcome speech. The chief guest of the program was the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Sharif Nafe As-Saber. Renowned architect, educator, founder and principal architect of Shatotto—Architecture for Green Living, Professor Md. Rafiq Azam, delivered the keynote speech. Professor Dr. B.C. Basak, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and university Registrar Mohammad Abdul Matin also spoke at the event.

In his speech, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Sharif Nafe As-Saber welcomed the initiative of the Department of Architecture and emphasized the role of teachers in developing responsible citizens and well-rounded human beings. Highlighting the deep relationship between architecture and nature, he said, “We will find our life in nature. To save the Earth, it is time to bring nature into architecture.”
In his keynote speech, Professor Md. Rafiq Azam spoke about architecture not merely as a technical discipline of building construction, but as something deeply connected with people, nature, culture, and local ways of life. Referring to the rivers, floods, and changing geographical landscape of Bangladesh, he emphasised architecture and urban planning that consider the natural processes rather than trying to control them.

He also identified human happiness, social interaction, and the ability to live well as important aspects of architecture. Drawing on his extensive professional experience, architectural practice, urban ideas, and thoughts on the future of architecture in Bangladesh, his valuable speech inspired the students, teachers, and guests present at the event.

During the open discussion session, students raised questions about the use of native trees, excessive dependence on air-conditioning systems, flooding and urbanisation, the natural flow of rivers, and the environmental impact of construction materials.

Professor Rafiq Azam said that many problems in architecture do not have simple solutions. He stressed that it is equally important to consider where, why, and how a particular construction material is being used. He also emphasised the importance of research, practical experience, and the integration of knowledge from different fields in addressing major environmental and urban challenges.

The discussion also called upon young architects of Bangladesh to move forward on the global stage with new ideas and creativity based on the country’s architectural heritage, environment, and realities.
A special moment of the program was the presentation of the book Rafiq Azam: Life, Architecture and Urbanism, written by architect Md. Rafiq Azam, to the Department of Architecture.

Former Chief Architect of the Department of Architecture under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Kazi Golam Nasir; engineer Shamsul Alam, a well-known figure in Bangladesh’s construction industry; and a large number of alumni of the Department of Architecture were also present at the event.

With the participation of teachers, students, alumni, and distinguished professionals from the architecture and construction sectors, the event turned into a vibrant gathering.

Associate Professor Sarah Bashnin Suchona supervised the overall program and delivered the vote of thanks. Associate Professor Sonya Afrin, Chairman of the Department, was thanked for her overall support. Associate Professor Saniya Tabassum and Assistant Professor Faria Sharmin were particularly appreciated for their initiative and overall coordination of the event. Senior Lecturer Sonia Sharmin was appreciated for her lively presentation. The presence of Assistant Professor Sabbir Ahmed was also appreciated.

Through this World Architecture Day program, the Department of Architecture of Stamford University Bangladesh reaffirmed its commitment to responsible architectural practice based on human values, environmental responsibility, and the creation of a livable environment for future generations.
