Stamford University hosts workshops on AI, business research and global trends

International academic Dr Sirajul Arefin Shibly leads sessions for students and faculty

The Department of Business Administration at Stamford University Bangladesh organised two development workshops on Thursday, bringing together students, faculty members and university leadership to discuss artificial intelligence, emerging global business trends and contemporary research practices.

The daylong initiative featured a Student Development Workshop in the morning and a Faculty Development Workshop in the afternoon. Dr Sirajul Arefin Shibly, Associate Professor at the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics, University of South Carolina Upstate, USA, was the keynote speaker at both sessions.

Prof Dr Farahnaaz Feroz, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Stamford University Bangladesh, appreciated the department’s initiative to promote academic development and strengthen international research collaboration.

The workshops were organised under the leadership and initiative of Prof Dr Mohammad Jeaul Hasan, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies.

AI and the future of business

The morning session, titled “AI in Business — The Must, The Myth, and The Monster,” was held at the University Auditorium.

Mohammad Nazmul Huq, Associate Professor and Head of the Marketing Discipline, delivered the welcome address, while Muhammad Abdul Matin, Registrar of the university, gave a special address.

In his keynote presentation, Dr Shibly discussed how generative and predictive AI are reshaping business operations and decision-making. He highlighted practical applications of AI while addressing misconceptions about AI replacing human workers.

He also discussed challenges associated with the rapid adoption of AI, including data security, responsible use of technology and the growing capabilities of autonomous AI agents.

The session ended with an interactive question-and-answer segment. Nusrat Fatema, Assistant Professor in the HRM Discipline, conducted the session, while Mustari Alam, Assistant Professor in the Marketing Discipline, delivered the vote of thanks.

Focus on contemporary business research

The afternoon Faculty Development Workshop, titled “Trends and Turbulences in Business Research,” was held in the university’s Conference Room.

Prof Dr Sharif Nafe As-Saber, Vice-Chancellor of Stamford University Bangladesh, delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the importance of academic workshops in keeping faculty members informed about emerging global trends in business research.

Dr Shibly discussed growing research areas, including AI-driven automation, environmental, social and governance (ESG) sustainability, and hybrid work models. He also highlighted evolving research methodologies, including data-driven bibliometric approaches and the use of mixed datasets, as well as challenges researchers face when seeking publication in leading academic journals.

Faria Kabir, Assistant Professor in the HRM Discipline, conducted the session, while Eti Laila Kazi, Assistant Professor in the Accounting Discipline, delivered the vote of thanks.

A six-member committee coordinated the workshops, with Mohammad Nazmul Huq serving as convener and Md Golam Rabbani, Assistant Professor and Head of the HRM Discipline, serving as co-convener.

Other committee members were Eti Laila Kazi, Md Moniruzzaman, Mohammed Jaynal Abedin and Mustari Alam.

The workshops reflected the department’s efforts to connect academic learning and research with technological transformation, evolving global business practices and international scholarly perspectives.
