Dr Sharif Nafe As-Saber is an internationally recognised academic, researcher, and policy commentator with nearly three decades of experience in higher education leadership, research, and international collaboration. He currently serves as the Vice Chancellor of Stamford University Bangladesh. His academic and professional career spans leading universities and international institutions across Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, and South Asia.
Prior to this appointment, Professor As-Saber held senior academic and leadership positions at several globally respected universities. He served as a senior academic at Sultan Qaboos University and earlier at RMIT University in Australia, where he held a number of leadership roles including Deputy Head/Dean (Research & Innovation) at the School of Management. At RMIT, he was the Founding Director of the Master of International Business Program and led the Geopolitics, Business and Government Research Cluster, contributing significantly to research development and international academic engagement.
Earlier in his career, he was associated with Monash University, where he served in key leadership roles including Founding Director of the MPhil (Industry) Program and Director of the International Business Program. He also held academic leadership positions as Sub-Dean (International Business) at the University of Tasmania and as International Business Program Manager at Massey University in New Zealand. In addition, he has taught at universities in China, Malaysia, and Vietnam as a visiting scholar.
Before entering academia, Dr As-Saber began his professional career in public service as the youngest-ever recruit to the Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) cadre - a record in the history of the country. In this role, he served in various governmental capacities, gaining early experience in public administration and governance.
Dr As-Saber holds a PhD in International and Comparative Management from the University of Tasmania. His multidisciplinary academic background includes degrees in law, international relations, and business - an LL.B., BSocSc (Hons), and MSocSc in International Relations from the University of Dhaka, and an MBA in International Business from Monash University. He also completed a faculty development program in International Business Law and Ethics at the University of Colorado Denver.
A prolific scholar, Professor As-Saber has authored nine books and published widely in leading refereed international journals. His research interests include e-governance, anti-corruption, social protection, illicit international business practices, and the intersection of geopolitics and global commerce. He has received several competitive research grants from major funding bodies, including the Australian Research Council and the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.
He serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals and is the Editor-in-Chief of the Fashion Business Journal.
Beyond academia, Professor As-Saber has been actively engaged in public policy, international networks, and community initiatives. He previously served as Vice Chair of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), Middle East Chapter. In recognition of his contributions to multicultural community development in Australia, he was appointed a member of the Victorian South Asian Communities Ministerial Advisory Council. He has also held leadership roles in international professional organisations, including the South Asian Public Affairs Council of Australia (SAPAC), Network of Asia Pacific Schools and Institutes of Public Administration and Governance (NAPSIPAG) and the Governance and Administration Innovation Network (GAIN International).
An engaged public intellectual, Professor As-Saber regularly contributes to policy discussions and media commentary on governance, economic development, international relations, and global business. His contributions to community engagement and multicultural dialogue have been recognised through several awards, including the Serendib Multicultural Personality of the Year Award and the ABA Community Excellence Award.
With his extensive international experience, research leadership, and commitment to public engagement, Dr As-Saber brings a global perspective and strategic vision to his role as Vice Chancellor of Stamford University Bangladesh.
