The Department of Film and Media at Stamford University offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Arts (Honors), Master of Arts Film and Media and Master of Arts Film and Media (Preliminary and Final) program of practical, historical and critical courses. Many of the courses concentrate on today’s systems of mass communication, information and entertainment, but they approach cinema and television, fiction and documentaries, advertising and experimental film, in the historical context that makes them possible. These historical and critical studies are combined with production courses in film, video and multimedia, on the premise that graduates should be versed in both the contexts and techniques of the art.
Bangladesh is an important area of film culture and film production, and Dhaka has long been a centre of excellence in both. It is quite fitting therefore that a Department of Film and Media Should be opened at Dhaka, which has advantages of location and of cohesiveness of academic work. A University should serve as a linkage between the academic community and society at large. Film studies would be ideally suited to this requirement, for the cinema is at once an art form and a mass medium, and has a profound impact upon the value of society at large. Particularly for the weaker sections of urban and rural Bangladesh, the importance of visual media like film and Television can hardly be overstated. Serious studies in this area must begin forthwith, for vital issues of communication and consciousness, crucial to the development effects of the nation, are involved here.
The pioneering Department of Film and Media at Stamford University may act as an advanced center for the study and management of visual communication. The Department of Film and Media knows that contemporary culture is dominated by film, television, video and related media. For this reason, we aim to engage with the key issues of our times. We want to be distinctive amongst such types of programs or departments of other universities of Bangladesh because of our primary concern with innovative contemporary film/media and its cultural significance. We focus on the film of the twentieth century from an international perspective, and we have particular interests in innovative performance, including experimental film, in community and inter-cultural film in the wider sense of ritual and social behavior.
